Canada Men’s Rugby match against Tonga on September 14
In a match amongst six teams, Tonga vs Canada will compete for fifth and sixth place in the Pacific Nations Cup. Tonga fell against Fiji and Samoa, while Canada lost to Japan and the USA.
Three more teams from the competition the following year will also qualify, and the tournament will serve as a qualifier for the Rugby World Cup in 2027. Japan and Fiji have already qualified. The only team that needs to select a different qualifying path is the sixth-place squad.
Along with Cooper Coats, who is back in the starting lineup, Matthew Oworu comes off the bench to start as the team’s blindside flanker. Josiah Morra makes his first start for the squad since the La Vila International Rugby Cup against Spain in November of last year.
Tyler Matchem, a 20-year-old who graduated from Pacific Pride, may start the game on the bench to earn his first cap for Canada, while Callum Botchar may make his first appearance for the squad since November 2022 and Siôn Parry may return after recovering from an injury.
