Griffith sport lovers are in for a treat this weekend with a range of top-class events added to the usual fixtures.

The ACT Brumbies and NSW Waratahs will battle it out in a pre-season trial at the Exies Oval on Saturday, 4 February 2023 from 4pm.

The historic game in Griffith will be the first time the Brumbies have played at Exies Sports Club, the trial against the Waratahs doubling as Stephen Larkham’s side’s first look at their round one opposition, with Scott Fava taking charge of his first game as Super W head coach against the South Australian Black Falcons. Residents are invited down to Kooyoo Street on Friday, 3 February 2023 from 5pm to 6pm to meet the players.

For those who prefer their sport poolside, the Speedo Sprint and Southern Inland Swimming Association Championships, attracting swimmers from as far as Wagga and Tumut, will take place on Saturday, 4 February and Sunday, 5 February at the Griffith Regional Aquatic Leisure Centre.

The Griffith Regional Sports Centre will also be a hive of activity over the two days, with the Little Athletics Region 4 Championships held. Around 850 athletes made up of 32 clubs will compete from East and Western Riverina, Mid-South Coast and South Coast Highlands. The first two placegetters in each event will progress to State competition.

The Brumbies will face the NSW Waratahs as part of a pre-season double-header and community activities in Griffith thanks to Round Two of the Regional Events Acceleration Fund (REAF).

Duty MLC for Murray, Wes Fang said $223,616 for ACT and Southern NSW Rugby Union would allow the Super Rugby Trial and a match involving the Brumbies women’s team to take place here in Griffith from February 1 to 5.

The Santos Festival of Rugby will return to Narrabri in 2023, with a pre-season trial between the Queensland Reds and New South Wales Waratahs once again the centrepiece of the annual celebration of Rugby.

Held from February 10 to 11, the event will offer a huge amount of top-line Rugby for fans, including elite Sevens, country representative matches and men’s and women’s Super Rugby fixtures.

Queensland Country and New South Wales Country will face off for regional bragging rights to kickstart the action on the Friday night, before the Reds and Waratahs Super W sides take to the field for the first time in the event’s three-year history the following evening.
