A replacement flyhalf The Chiefs assaulted their line for 23 phases, but Harry McLaughlin-Phillips proved to be the hero by receiving the pilfer penalty. Thanks to tries from Fraser McReight and Matt Faessler, the Reds got off to a fast start and led 15–11 at halftime.

Queensland has defeated the Chiefs two years in a row, this time with a valiant defensive effort that saw off 23 phases of attack. No. 10 Reserve Harry McLaughlin-Phillips emerged as the improbable champion, achieving the last breakdown turnover.

After a devastating loss to the Hurricanes by golden points last weekend, the Reds have bounced back to have a 2-1 record under new coach Les Kiss.

Despite the absence of top playmaker Tom Lynagh, who was taken off the field in the 53rd minute after taking a vicious late shot to the ribs, they managed to score the game-winning points.

Only moments after visiting the doctor for a shoulder ailment, Chiefs flanker Samipeni Finau gave five-eighth Lynagh the full steamroller.

After a rolling maul in the 17th minute, hooker Matt Faessler crossed for his fourth try in three games. Six minutes later, Fraser McReight gave the Reds the lead with a deft read from halfback Tate McDermott.

The clinical Chiefs took advantage of their few first-half opportunities, with fullback Josh Ioane scoring on their lone excursion inside their opponents’ 22-meter zone in the first 25 minutes.

Unquestionably, the Reds’ defensive intensity was on display as they held off two intense 12-phase Chiefs possessions in the latter half of the first half and gave up just one penalty goal.
